A 1950s era half Cape on a hillside overlooking Little Harbor in the Woods Hole village oF Falmouth, MA, was outdated and neglected. The client had spent summers there growing up and after acquiring the property, he wanted to update the house with modern amenities while making the property their own.
The client wanted to respect the bones of the cottage, which was nicely renovated in the 90s. Their specific goals were to add a new front covered porch, improve the driveway, rebuild the sunroom, renovate the kitchen & rear entry, add a new second floor bunk room, and all new exterior finishes and landscape.
While positioned on a sunny, south-facing hillside, the property was overgrown and underutilized. In addition, the house is a corner lot with a private road in the rear, which limited privacy and access. The project was completed in phases with the interior work, which required working closely with the interior designer for detail and coordination with their extensive changes.
While it was a rather simple Cape at the outset, the earlier 90s era renovation set the tone for the project that has been carried into the current and future renovation work. Bead board, nice casings, trim, finishes, fixtures, materials, and artwork, all contribute to a cottage feel that is uniquely Cape Cod and the client.
The project is still ongoing, with a second phase master suite in the works but it is one of our best examples of a successful outcome when we’re able to work closely with the interior designer and builder to achieve a unique, personal look for a client and place.
