This was a renovation of an existing kitchen & dining room space in a 90s era home nestled in a sunny Cape Cod neighborhood. Project completion saw a re-imagined kitchen, dining room, and living space while simplifying and upgrading the powder room, laundry, pantry, and garage access.
The initial goal was to improve the aesthetic and functionality of their kitchen space and evolved when the paradigm was shifted to creating an overall better living space.
This project presented a unique set of challenges beginning with the fact that the original plan book house was not adjusted to the site in thoughtful ways. After gaining the confidence and persuading the conservative-minded professional that shifting creative goals would attain a dramatically improved result, this required modification of framing and bearing walls to implement the new scheme.
The plan was to renovate the existing structure by removing several walls while adding 4 large windows facing the sun-drenched side yard. Now, plenty of natural light could animate the newly created living space. We relocated the garage entry in tandem with the laundry/powder room/pantry functions to allow a new synthesis of kitchen, dining, and living into a life room.
When combined, the various components of the redesign make a modest sized house and interior space live big. Now featuring opening/moving walls, doors, strategically placed windows to enhance natural light and scenic outdoor views, and connection of interior spaces, the home shows clarity of purpose – a distinct paradigm shift from the initial goal of enjoying a better kitchen, to a vastly improved overall living space.
