This project features a small 1.5 story Cape style barn, appropriately scaled on a historic property in Dennis, MA. which is intended to store vehicles, gardening equipment, and provide a second-floor workshop.
The client’s goal was to design a barn that would fit their historic Cape Cod property while facilitating the storage of vehicles, outdoor equipment, and gardening supplies. In addition, they required a second-floor workshop for a luthier hobby and cabinet making business.
The house is located in the Old Kings Highway Historic District, and it was important to the client that the barn be scaled appropriately for its intended use while resembling a traditional Cape Cod cranberry barn. It’s a much different look compared with the typical cattle barns found throughout Western Massachusetts or Vermont, so some research and benchmarking were required to get it right. The client had also requested a solar array on the roof but was denied by the Historic District Commission.
The client made the right judgement and request for their vision of this structure. It fits and supports the historic house perfectly as the well-executed outbuilding that it is.
