Four Corners is a whole house historic renovation with removal of previous addition to make way for the new design. All systems, infrastructure, and finishes were updated on this late 19th century home.
Create a new primary residence for the family in the Cataumet neighborhood of Bourne, MA on Cape Cod. The existing structure was a late 19th century home that they intended to utilize for year-round living. Success would make the family custodians of a historic house in the Town of Bourne and contributors to the legacy of the area for generations to come.
The existing structure was largely neglected for 50 years, and featured an old, ill-considered addition, linked by stairs and corridors. The previous addition had to be removed without disturbing the existing house and foundation. Enhancements to the existing wrap-around porch and existing house’s charm by seamlessly replicating and integrating all the existing trim and details with new.
We simplified and unified the overall structure by aligning the new floors and creating one main staircase for the whole house. Elimination of redundant stairs and circulation gave the addition more space on what was essentially the same footprint. All of the existing architectural language and detail of the original house was replicated, extended, and modified in areas such as the new outdoor shower, new side entry, and new sunroom.
Working closely with the skilled craftsmen of Valle Group, the house was flawlessly rebuilt and enhanced to the high level of intricate detail that the house deserves. Simple strategy and understanding the architectural language of the existing house led to a genuine, heartfelt house renovation which the client will enjoy for generations to come.
