Transform an existing kitchen and dining area into a vibrant “life room” that redefines the character of the home.
The client envisions a new, integrated kitchen, dining, and living area centered around a multi-person kitchen that elevates the home’s gathering experience. This design will enhance functionality while fostering social interaction and connection throughout the space.
Referred by Sandra Cavallo for interior work and permitting coordination, the project presented an ordinarily built colonial with a first-floor timber frame and underwhelming, narrow kitchen, dining, and living spaces. The existing layout lacked the capacity for a multi-person kitchen and sufficient natural light, prompting a request for a more inviting bay window.
During the sketch design phase, GFA reimagined the bay window to widen the kitchen and center it around the existing fireplace and island. Building on this concept, we expanded the bay along the rear of the house to create additional seating and transform the space into a larger, light-filled, multi-functional hub that seamlessly integrates upgraded dining and media areas.
A simple request transformed the living experience of the house. By understanding the issues that created a desire to be in the space, we discovered a transformative solution that revitalized not only the kitchen but also the living areas, dining areas, back deck, rear elevation, and circulation flow. Furthermore, this approach provided a platform for the interiors team to assemble a cohesive palette of finishes, colors, and fixtures on the floors, walls, and ceiling, fulfilling the request extraordinarily.
