Ranch Redux

Modern renovation transforms a cherished 1950s ranch into a sustainable family legacy.

Project Description

GF Architecture is proud to transform a cherished 1950’s ranch house—originally built by the family’s grandparents—into a modern haven that honors its storied past while catering to today’s lifestyle. The project involves a full renovation, along with the addition of a second floor that introduces flexible, light-filled living spaces and a purpose-built garage that complements the home’s original charm. Emphasizing sustainability and efficiency, our design seamlessly blends contemporary comforts with mid-century character, ensuring the home remains a treasured family legacy for generations to come.

Client's Goals

Fully renovate the existing ranch home by adding a garage and a second level. The goal is to create a versatile space that serves as a summer gathering hub for extended family while also providing a comfortable, future retirement residence.

Unique Challenges

Duffany Builders referred this project to GFA due to its location in a flood zone and the presence of a full basement—a feature the client was determined to keep despite regulatory challenges. A phased workaround was developed to preserve the basement while complying with building codes.

Design Approach

A master plan was crafted for the entire house, incorporating a new garage/art studio, second-floor bedroom suites, a new prime suite on the main level, and a reimagined living, dining, and kitchen area. With the addition of the garage, daily entry, and guest/formal entry, circulation was vastly improved. Notably, as the house is located at the end of the road with its front door previously concealed, a new covered entry facing oncoming guests was proposed. The combined additions of the second floor and garage not only reoriented the entry but also created extra living space and simplified the home’s appearance. Working with the structural engineer, the second floor and roof were built over the existing first-floor ceiling framing.

Conclusion

This project is a heartfelt, thoughtfully reimagined regeneration of a cherished 50’s era ranch that preserves and enhances the family’s summer legacy for generations. By seamlessly blending timeless charm with modern comforts, it stands as a uniquely personal tribute to enduring family traditions.
