The Chapel

A peaceful place for meditation and prayer, at home

Project Description

An existing sunroom was transformed into a space for mediation, prayer, and display of artistic religious stained glass.

Client's Goals

A client moving to a new residence requested a new space be created to display his collection of religious stained glass. Each set of panels were placed in the order of his daily prayers.

Unique Challenges

Due to the nature of the project, materials, and location of the property, there were quite a few unique challenges in the way. To start, the existing footprint could not be changed due to flood zone restrictions. This horizontal space restriction was especially challenging because the glass art panels were a pre-existing size, and the space had to designed around them while considering other limitations – One being a vertical space restriction, so that existing second floor ocean views were not blocked, and the other being the significant weight of the panels themselves, which are about 500 lbs. Furthermore, it was important that the panels be be moveable with finger-tip ease.

Design Approach

Utilizing the existing pavilion footprint, we created a new sunroom-like pavilion to compliment the existing Royal Barry Wills house. We then developed a large composition of windows to allow the display of art glass inside. Large picture framed panels holding the stained glass were created to float in front of the exterior windows, resting on a display plinth. Handpicked flitches of English Elm veneers were selected for each panel. Concealed hinges were sourced to support the heavy panels, and magnetic catches were used to achieve fingertip ease-of-movement. A new LED lighting system dims and brightens automatically to adjust for variations in natural light, highlighting a decorative interior timber frame structure that was built inside the space. Existing pendant lights and other religious artifacts were also incorporated.

Conclusion

Our design approach and close collaboration with a great builder were keys to successful execution of the client’s vision, overcoming an array of challenges and restrictions for the space, land use, and unique materials.
